There's rare and then there's this Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 racer. One of only four ever made, this celebrated machine is up for grabs at auction

Silverstone Auctions are set to offer an extreme rarity from the classic car world. Heading under the hammer during the auctioneers’ inaugural Autosport International Sale at the NEC on January 12, 2019 is an incredibly unusual Studebaker Lark Daytona 500 race car with estimates between £100,000 - £130,000 ($128,000 - $166,000, €112,000 - €146,000).

One of only four racing versions in existence, and the only example located within Europe, the American muscle car has seen racing action in top level events over the last decade.

More on the Studebaker

Built down in South Bend, Indiana for the 1965 model year, this Lark was later converted into an out-and-out racer on UK soil, with no expense spared. Crafted by single-seater racing experts Fortec Motorsport, more recent works have been undertaken by Richard Mooring Racing, specialists in historic saloons.

Sporting a dapper White paint scheme and configured in left-hand drive, the Studebaker houses a freshly prepared Chevrolet V8 powerplant boasting 430bhp and full compliance with FIA regulations. Running to a minimum agreed weight of 1200kgs in the Masters series, the engine is capped to a limited 7000rpm.

As the only racing Lark Daytona 500 in Europe, the Studebaker has been invited to compete at Goodwood no less than five times over the last decade, gaining a regular top finish during the Pierpoint Cup, the Jack Sears Trophy and St. Mary’s Trophy. At the Goodwood Revival 2018, it qualified third and finished second overall in the St. Mary's Trophy celebrity race.
