Instead of a boring presentation on GM's new LT5 V8 crate engine, Chevrolet Performance have put this ZL1 unit into a 1973 Chevelle Laguna. Seeing is believing.
General Motors is well known for supplying ‘crate engines’ for anyone with the cash to buy them. LS small-block V8 engines can be found in many restomods with buyers relishing the compact size and how tuneable the unit is. Now you can get GM’s most powerful engine ever, and Chevrolet Performance are demonstrating the LT5’s potential with a 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna.

To make its debut at SEMA 2018 alongside other crate engine demo cars, the Chevelle Laguna has been loaded with the new LT5 engine that’s also found in the latest Corvette ZL1. It’s good for an incredible 755bhp and a Monmouth 715lb-ft of torque before modification. While there’s no performance figures for the boosted Chevelle, this 6.5-litre V8 engine can get a ZL1 to a top speed of 210mph. It’s well documented that the LS small-block engines are capable of producing over 1,000bhp when tuned, so imagine what might be possible with the LT5 as a starting point!
The '73 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna combines sinister tones of black and red that coats a body inspire by NASCAR. A new chin splitter and rear spoiler is homage to this car’s motorsport past. There’s also a nod to the Corvette ZR1 supercar in shaping of the bonnet.
Chevrolet crate engines are now even quicker to install thanks to the ‘Connect & Cruise kit’ with enables them to be easily mated to qualifying transmissions. If you’re modifying a car that is older than 1995 you might want to get the E-ROD variant of your chosen engine that makes it compliant with Californian’s emissions laws.
The other SEMA star cars from Chevrolet Performance are a 1967 Chevrolet C10 pickup truck equipped with a ZZ6 V8, and a 1978 Chevrolet Silverado pickup featuring an L96 unit. These living demonstration cars sure beat a brochure!
