Rock & Rolls-Royce! This rare luxury icon has been owned by The Who band members Roger Daltrey and Peter Vernon-Kell is headed to auction
Some cars have such a strong ownership history that you have to wonder if you’re missing out on something exclusive if you don’t purchase it yourself. This stunning 1966 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III 'Flying Spur' Sports Saloon, to be sold at Duxford on October 17 by H&H Classics, is one such vehicle and could be yours for less than £200,000.
Only 35 versions of the Silver Cloud III were made with H.J. Mulliner Park Ward’s ‘Flying Spur’ coachwork, making it one of the rarer Rolls-Royces you can find on the market. The car was first sold to The Rt Hon R Nivison of Haslemer, and then floated into the ownership of Mr R A Duck of Teddington about three years later. The fourth owner was Wensley Haydon-Baillie, formerly one of Britain’s richest men and a well-renowned hovercraft enthusiast and restorer of Spitfires.

Peter Vernon-Kell acquired the car, then sold it to rocker friend Roger Daltry of ‘The Who’ in the early 1970s, who kept it for almost half a decade. In the last two decades it has had three owners, the most recent of which who has ensured the car has undergone a thorough refurbishing and restoration.
The Silver Cloud III was the final generation of the ‘Cloud’ line of cars, and was significantly lighter than its predecessors. Improvements were made in several areas including enlarged carburettors, raising the compression ratio (accompanied by improved fuel at the time), and a more aerodynamic shape. Added up, these meant the car was able to do 0-60mph in under 11 seconds at the time and capable of speeds far north of 100mph.
This model has covered over 92,000 miles, and its Regal Red coachwork remains untouched, as does the Cream hide and red carpet interior. The vendor of the car regards the coachwork, paintwork, upholstery, V8 engine and automatic transmission as all being in 'excellent' order, and is offering the factory build sheet, full original tool kit and sundry invoices with the sale.
