What if you could combine classic looks with modern performance? Piper Motorsport has done exactly that with a C63 AMG and a classic Mercedes 190E.
You know those really bad Christmas cracker jokes such as ‘what do you get if you cross a kangaroo with a sheep? A wooly jumper.' This story started to sound like one of those Xmas day zingers as it combined an old Mercedes-Benz 190E with a much newer C63 AMG, however, the end result is quite the punchline!
Piper Motorsport decided to take the underpinnings for the Mercedes-AMG C63 and combine it with the body of the classic 190E. The process might sound simple, but it took five years to complete this genetic fusion. It retains the engine, transmission, suspension, brakes, fire wall, dashboard, electronics and the floor pan from the new car. That means the 190E’s body had to be carefully dissected and modified to fit its new skeleton.

The cabin is an intriguing retrofit of a modern AMG interior that looks out onto the old-school three-pointed star hood ornament. When you look at the attention to detail and engineering required to pull this off, you soon start to see why this project took so long. Several components actually had to be relocated from the engine bay as there wasn’t enough space in the classic body. The oil coolers, air-conditioning, and brake master cylinder all had to find new homes. Piper Motorsport did an incredible job and we can’t wait to see it in motion.
There’s not much information on this extreme retro-mod’s performance, but we do know that it uses the last of AMG’s 6.2-litre V8 units that’s good for 457bhp in standard tune. That engine could get the saloon from 0-60mph in 4.4 seconds — now with a lighter 190 Evo styled body, that figure might be even more impressive.
This unique build deserves some attention as its execution is so impressive. The idea of a 190E Evo with a modern naturally aspirated AMG V8 is one we like a lot.
