A 1965 E-type owned by multiple motorsport champion Sir John Whitmore is to go under hammer in Silverstone Auctions’ September Sale
A 1965 Jaguar E-type Series 1 4.2 FHC owned by the late motorsport legend Sir John Whitmore is to be auctioned at the Dallas Burston Polo Club late next month. The September Sale, held by Silverstone Auctions, is taking place on September 29 at the prestigious polo club in the heart of the Warwickshire countryside, the first time the venue has hosted the sale.
Whitmore won the British Saloon Car Championship – the forerunner of today’s British Touring Car Championship – on his first attempt in 1961 driving an Austin Mini Seven. He also finished runner-up in the series in 1963, driving a Mini Cooper.

Whitmore went on to win the European Touring Car Championship in 1965 driving a Lotus Cortina, finishing first in class in eight of the nine races. As well as this, he competed in the Le Mans 24-hours five times, including finishing second in class in the 1959 race paired with Jim Clark.
After his motor-racing career, Whitmore became a pioneer in the executive coaching industry. He died last year aged 79.
Whitmore purchased the E-type Series 1 in 1965 from Henlys Ltd of London. The car has just returned from a complete glass-out professional repaint and body restoration, and is estimated to sell for between £90,000 and £110,000. Originally finished in Golden Sand with a red leather interior, it is now painted in Carmen Red.
It’s powered by a 4.2-litre straight-six engine, goes from 0-60mph in 7.6 seconds and has a top speed of 150mph. After a head-gasket failure in 2012, it was taken in for a number of outstanding jobs including a full top-end engine rebuild, with the total sum of the work reaching £12,000.
‘It’s a great honour to offer a true motorsport great’s car at the September Sale,’ said Joe Watts, classic car specialist at Silverstone Auctions. ‘The sale has become even more poignant since Sir John’s death in April last year. Even without Sir John’s involvement, this E-type is fantastic and one of the most sympathetic combinations of ease-of-use upgrades and originality we have ever had the pleasure to offer for auction.’
