Five-time Le Mans winner Derek Bell in a restored first-gen 911 leads latest celebrations of Porsche’s 70th anniversary at famous historic event

Porsche will hold its latest celebration of its 70th birthday at this weekend’s Oldtimer Grand Prix (10-12 August, 2018), with a range of attractions led by Derek Bell racing a resorted first-generation 911.

The five-times overall Le Mans winner will be contesting the 1965 car in the Gentleman Drivers category at the famous Nürburgring historic event. The 911 has been restored by four British Porsche Classic Partners, and Bell will be one of the team in the Saturday-evening series for GT vehicles built up to ’65.

Bell will also be available for autographs at the Porsche Classic stand from 10.30am on the Saturday morning.

Also marking the 70th anniversary of Porsche’s first model will be two races of the current Porsche Carrera Cup, which are included on the Oldtimer programme for the first time.

Bell to race restored Porsche 911 at Oldtimer Grand Prix

Porsche will showcase its extended history at the Oldtimer Grand Prix, in an area of 16,000 square metres in the direct vicinity of the race track. Among the attractions is a drivetrain from the 964-generation 911 to mark the 30th anniversary of the 911 Carrera 4, one of the most important development steps in the history of the 911. The Carrera 4 has now been extensively reworked with 85 per cent new parts, and equipped for the first time with all-wheel drive.

When introduced in 1988, the Carrera 4’s newly designed 3.6-litre engine was the most powerful naturally aspirated unit in the history of the 911. It was also the first passenger car engine in the world to have a controlled metal catalyst.

As part of the anniversary exhibition, around 50 private type-964 models will feature alongside a 964 Turbo S and a 964 RS from the Porsche Museum collection. In 1990, it was a type-964 911 that launched the Porsche Carrera Cup Germany.

Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur will also be presenting 12 highly customised vehicles from all model lines at the Oldtimer Grand Prix. Customer advisors will be on hand to provide information about factory enhancement options and the Porsche Tequipment range of accessories.

A current Porsche model can be rented on site by the hour thanks to Porsche Drive, and the ‘event truck’ presented by Porsche Driver’s Selection will showcase the current collection as well as offer selected items from the Porsche Museum and accessories from Porsche Classic.
