One of only two examples upgraded to LM Specification, the 670bhp race-inspired hypercar heads RM's new Private Sales operation

A 1998 McLaren F1, the penultimate example built of the long-reigning fastest car in the world, made up to ‘LM Specification’ is to be sold privately by RM Sotheby’s.

This car, chassis 073, according to the owner’s manual, was originally finished in AMG Green Velvet with a two-tone cream and green interior. But, rather than take delivery, the owner requested that the F1 be retained my McLaren at Woking where all subsequent work and upgrades on the car were carried out.

It was subject to substantial modifications by McLaren Special Operations – which recently unveiled a one-off 675LT painted to match the Gulf-liveried McLaren F1 LM.

The modifications included the addition of a more powerful LM-specification engine from the endurance race car. Power was increased to 670bhp courtesy of a higher compression ratio, uprated cams and pistons and a sports exhaust. Chassis 073 is one of only two road-going F1s to receive the LM engine.

Exterior modifications came in the form of the Extra High Downforce Package. It included a revised nose with more aggressive front wing vents and a larger rear wing. A custom set of 18-inch, multi-spoke wheels were added also.

The car was also repainted in its current metallic orange plus a replacement magnolia leather and Alcantara interior was installed. An upgrade to GT-trim also meant the air-conditioning was upgraded and a stereo and satellite navigation were fitted.

In total, this F1 has covered less than 6000km in its 20-year life, with only 700km added by its original owner. Back in 2013, $80,000 was spent replacing the clutch and fuel cell.

In 2015, this car was sold at RM’s Pebble Beach auction for a reported $13.75 million. But this time around, the sale will take place behind closed doors.

It comes as RM launches its Private Sales division, offering a discreet and personal acquisition service.
