The classic car valuations expert from Jay Leno's Garage TV show will give his unique buying advice at the Los Angeles Convention Center this weekend
Donald Osborne, the valuations expert who appears on Jay Leno’s Garage every week, is to appear at the Los Angeles Classic Auto Show on Saturday 3 March to give advice on buying classic cars.
His '10 Reasons Why Not to Buy in Today’s Market and 10 Reasons Why You Must' talk will cover common buying mistakes, and gives examples. Here are three sneak previews from Donald:
REASON NOT TO BUY #5
'It’s a really easy restoration, not much is missing.'
Example: 1971 Alfa Romeo 1750 GTV. Bodyshell is on dolly wheels; the doors are off; the engine, gearbox and drivetrain have been removed; the wheels, suspension and brakes are off; and the interior is out. The bodyshell has been restored and sprayed in red, but neither the condition of the mechanicals nor the car’s completeness is known. What could possibly go wrong?
REASON NOT TO BUY #8
'Sure they only made nine, but how hard could it be to get parts?
Example: 1935 Stout Scarab. Five still exist; engine parts are actually easy, it’s a Ford V8, but the transmission is proprietary. Shift carefully!
REASON YOU MUST BUY #6
'Upgrade your collection'
Example: 1963 Iso Grifo A3/L Prototype. If you have one the best examples of the production Iso Grifo, here was a rare chance to have a unique example, the one that began it all, out of long term ownership. Opportunities such as this come along very rarely and few are as potentially rewarding. The price? Find the other one...
As for Donald, he will make several further appearances this year, some related to his recent book Stile Transatlantico / Transatlantic Style – A Romance of Fins and Chrome, and will soon be busy filming further episodes of Assess & Caress with Donald Osborne for Jay Leno’s Garage.
